Subtlety is a conceptual chess set in which each piece is visually identical. To distinguish identities of the pieces, the player must tactiley identify the contents of the pieces' hollow cores. A combination of some amount of each sand and metal nuts delineates which piece is which.
The set is an exploration into patience and mindfulness. In a standard game of chess a glance at the board is enough to determine which move to take next, so I wanted to explore what it would be like if time between moves was very slowed. By connecting physically with the pieces and expending more attention per turn, Subtlety transforms chess into a different experience.
